JEWELS is a program designed for girls between 12 and 18 years old. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that young women move through adolescence and into adulthood with a strong sense of self worth and healthy self esteem.
The work that young women complete as members of JEWELS is designed to help prepare them physically, socially, emotionally, intellectually, and culturally – for passage into womanhood.
The JEWELS program seeks to provide girls with the tools necessary to create a roadmap for their lives that will lead them in a direction that society sometimes says is not possible because of their race, class or gender.
During the length of the program the participating girls are guided through a highly interactive series of work sessions which are anchored in our organizational principles called the Just BE Isms. Each week we tackle different topics relative to their growth and development from deconstructing media to conflict resolution. Our approach to dealing with these critical issues is multifaceted; we use guest speakers, pop culture, role playing, multi-media presentations and a number of other culturally competent and uncomplicated tools.
The JEWELS program is delivered in three different levels:
-
Middle School (6th - 8th Grade)
-
High School (9th and 10th Grade)
-
Upper classmen/Young Adult
The Middle School program is heavily focused on life skills and conflict resolution. In the second phase, during High School, the girls focus more on self development and goal setting. During the final phase the JEWELS are working on leadership development and life mapping.
The JEWELS Program is currently at Mastery Charter School: Lenfest Campus, Young Scholors Charter School and Kensington Creative and Performing Arts High School all in Philadelphia, PA. However, we are working on a facilitator's program guide that can be made available to groups working with girls anywhere in the world.
